Boon Ja Yoo, born in 1935 in South Korea, emigrated to the United States in 1968 and embarked on a career in nursing. Throughout her lifetime, she committed herself to altruistic endeavors, focusing on those affected by economic hardships and cultural or linguistic challenges faced by individuals living in the United States. Her special dedication was directed towards first-generation Korean American immigrants, low-income Korean American families, and Korean American women.

Boon Ja Yoo held several distinguished roles in various organizations, including serving as the 2nd and 3rd President of the Korean American Nurse Association of Southern California. She also served as the Founder and President of the Overseas Korean Nurses Association and was a Founding Board member and President of the Korean American Family Services of Los Angeles. Additionally, she played a vital role as a Founding Board member and President of the Orange County Korean Family Legal Counsel Organization. Boon Ja Yoo also contributed as a Founding Board member of the Global Children Foundation.

Furthermore, President Yoo made history as the very first Korean American member of the UCI Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) Leadership Council, aiming to ensure adequate representation of Asian Americans in medical research. Her dedication to the well-being of the Korean American community and her impactful leadership in healthcare and community organizations are exemplary.
